Note: All sightings on this page are presented in (reversed) chronological order. If the latest report added to this page have been done during an earlier date than the date in top, it is notified here:

26th October–4th November: Sightings from the Madeira Wind Birds website:

American Wigeon Anas americana: A single seen at Lugar de Baixo pond on 4th November 2008. If accepted this is the first for Madeira archipelago.
Osprey Pandion haliaetus: One observed on 30th of October 2008 in Seixal, on the north-western part of Madeira. This was the 6th record over the last 50 years.
Gyr Falcon Falco rusticolus: On 26th October 2008 a bird was observed in Funchal coast, just near Santiago Fortress. The bird had black jesses on both legs and as it seemed also two silver thin rings. It is certainly an escapee bird from a Falconry, though most probably not from Madeira, as there is no knowledge of any falconry in Madeira.

11–18th September: Peter and Wilma Rozemeijer (Netherlands) have kindly provided sightings and photos as follows:

Hello,

Together with my wife Wilma, I stayed on Madeira (one day on Porto Santo) from 11 till 18 September 2008 to have a holiday and to look for some of the interesting birds of Madeira.

I saw the endemics and nice seabirds (mainly on our trip to Porto Santo (very close Fea's Petrel flying next to the ferry for quite some time, Bulwer's Petrels, Little, Manx and of course Cory Shearwaters and one Great Skua) but the birds of main interest I saw on Wednesday 17th, namely an American Golden Plover (Pluvialis dominica)! I enclose some photo's I could take with my not well equipped digital camera.

I saw the bird near the 'Miradauro' of Ponta de Sao Lourenco. The bird drew my attention by its call, a two-syllabic, somewhat vibrating 'tsuu-ie', very different from the call of the Eurasian Golden Plover. Next what drew my attention were the long and narrow based wings and darkish grey colour of the underwings. After landing the first impression of the bird was a bulky breasted, long legged, long winged and white faced 'golden plover'. As you can see on the photo's the legs of the bird were long, tibia clearly visible and the long wings, clearly protruding the tail. (You have to enlarge the right photo below to see this well). The bird had a very white face and a broad white supercilium. The very long wings, the longs legs NOT protruding the tail in flight, together with the call and broad supercilium should in my opinion exclude a Pacific Golden Plover.

An American Golden Plover at Ponta de São Lourenço on 17th September 2008. The first for Madeira, if accepted. Several experts have agreed that the bird are correctly identificated. Photo: Peter Rozemeijer, Netherlands.

When I tried to come closer to the bird to take better pictures some tourist with a very pink t-shirt was ahead of me and chased the bird away. The bird circled one time over my head, calling loud, and then disappeared in the direction of the white windmills. Although on the photo's you can see the long legs, I saw no protruding legs when the bird was flying over me.

The second bird I would like to mention was a Caspian Tern (nice adult bird) that I saw on the 16th flying along the beach of Porto Santo in the direction of Baxio. (Only the 2nd record ever! ed.)

Kind regards

Sightings and photos kindly provided by Peter Rozemeijer, Netherlands.

10–17th September: Andy Paterson (Spain) have kindly provided sightings as follows:

9–14th September: Janne and Hannah Aalto (Finland) have kindly provided sightings as follows:

OK, finally back at home after another week in Andalucia.

We weren't really lucky in Madeira as the wind and occasional rains did birding difficult. Southern wind pushed the seabirds far to the sea and probably stopped migration pretty badly...

9-21st September: Istvan Katona (Hungary) have kindly provided sightings directly from Madeira as follows:

Mail on 16th:
Hi Niklas,

Thanks, just to confirm, we checked and found the Pectoral Sandpiper yesterday, it is a very tame bird. Location: Ponta do Pargo, go to the teahouse, then walk back 100 m on the road until a sharp bend upwards, where water is flowing on the road. There is an abandoned house, the bird is among the grass in the garden or even on the road.

Best,
Istvan

Mail on 15th:
Just a brief note from Porto Moniz to help other birders around right now. On 14th we saw and photographed (bad quality) a Hobby while it was hunting on the plateau of Paul de Serra, north from the crossroad, where the main road turns to north to Ribeira de Janela and south to another town (maybe Calheta or Prazeres).

On 13th there was a stocky very dark brown Whimbrel flying along the shore to the east very close, without any white on its rump (independently seen by Paul and Jill from Norfolk, UK). We think it was a bird of the American supspecies hudsonicus.

On the 13th we saw one female leucorhoa Wheatear at Ponta do Pargo, then on the 14th, the Norfolk birders found 4 of this subspecies. They also saw and photographed (nice images!) a very tired Pectoral Sandpiper on the road close to the teahouse. We try to check out soon.

The male Green-winged Teal is still present at Riberia de Janela in full breeding plumage this morning (15th).

Otherwise seawatching is quite poor. 3 Sooty Shearwaters and dozens of Great Shearwaters on 11th, since then nothing special. Janne and Hannah Aalto, the Finnish couple will send you the numbers.

Best wishes,
Istvan

Sightings kindly provided by Istvan Katona, Hungary.

The authors of the excellent and recently published book Petrels Night and Day: A Sound Approach suggest a split of the Madeiran into four species. However, there is lot more research to do before a split will be accepted. Please check out Angus Wilson's (OceanWanderers) book blogspot for more information about this issue and the book here» The book also discuss/suggest a split of the two Pterodroma poupulations of Fea at Cape Verde and Bugio (Desertas, Madeira). Get yourself an opinion. I got mine...
Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus: 16
Arctic Skua Stercorarius stercorarius: 1 juv

Comment by the web editor: In Tony Clarke's book birds of the Atlantic Islands the Arctic Tern is mention as rare with fever than five records, but I don't think it's true. I think it is a regular passage migrant at Porto Moniz in late summer. On two of visits (periods of seawatch) at Porto Moniz I have recorded distant and dense flocks "Comic" Terns towards west-northwest (not SW), especially in the evening about two to three hours before sunset. I has always believed that the main part of those terns was Arctic's.

Sightings kindly provided by Ingo Weiss & Markus Römhild, Germany.

I was looking at your bird list and I just want to tell you about three White Storks that I've seen at Palheiro Ferreiro on 12th August (Palheiro Ferreiro is located at the eastern part of Funchal). I remember seeing a couple of White Storks about 12 years ago, nesting at Quinta da Palmeira, at Santa Luzia - Funchal and since then, this is my first sighting of this bird. Concerning the Waxbills I can tell you there were more than 100 at Lugar de Baixo a few days ago. I actually went to Lido this morning and I counted 13 Monk Parakeets.

"Hi Niklas,

I had little time to go birding, however a short report follows my stay at the Carlton in Funchal.

Kestrel seen in valley next to hotel on several occasions. Common Tern and Plain Swift, increasing numbers during the week. Due to poor weather a trip to Desertas was not possible so I did a short afternoon trip with Ventura Do Mar, lots of Cory's seen together with an Eagle, but too distant for positive ID. Little Egret seen several times in stream leading into Funchal harbour, also in lake in park above harbour. Common sandpiper with turnstones at Avenida das Comunidades. A short trip to Machico and the following seen: Little Egret, Blackcap, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Grey Wagtail, Canary. Turnstone and Blackbird. Around Funchal I also saw Robin, Yellow Legged Gull and Peregrine Falcon seen twice on chair lift trip."
