2–12th October 2006: Stefan Masur (Germany) have kindly provided sightings from his nice honeymoon, with his wife of course, in Madeira as follows:

I won't bore you with the breeding birds, here are only some of the more interesting migrant species I saw during our nice visit:

Eurasian Teal Anas crecca: A female-type at Lugar de Baixo on 10th and 12th October. The species is scarce and far from seen yearly in the Madeira archipelago. Most recently records as follows: 1 male at Moinhos on 3rd and 9th January 2005 and one male at Porto da Cruz on 8th January 2005. No records from 2004.
Spotted Sandpiper Actitis macularius: One 1st cal year (along with a Common Sandpiper) at Lugar de Baixo on 4th October (the 8th record for Madeira). This bird was seen for an hour only, during our daily visits at the pond, which suggest this was another bird than the bird seen at the place on 24th September 2006. View two photos in larger size here»
Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus: 1 adult winter in Funchal Harbour on 4th October. Very scarce, but probably over-looked, as a regular visitor in winter.
Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica: 1 at Ponta do Pargo on 8th October.
White Wagtail Motacilla alba: 1 at Tanque pond, Porto Santo, on 9th October.
Spotted Flycatcher Muscicapa striata: 1 at Tanque pond, Porto Santo, on 9th October. (Listed as "exceptional" and there is only one documented record in recent years: 1 on Porto Santo on 24th September 2003! Except for a few records made on the Salvage Islands).
Northern Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe: Ponta do Pargo: 1 on 3rd October on a brief visit, at least 15 (!) on 8th October on a more extensive search. Two separate groups of 6 and 5 and a few single birds. This seems to be a major influx, as more then 1-2 birds has rarely been recorded within a day or at one specific locality.

The sightings kindly provided by Stefan Masur, Germany.

21–27th September 2006: Alexandre Leitão & Carlos Noivo (Portugal) have kindly provided sightings during their week-long journey at sea as follows:

"Me and Carlos Noivo (an excellent birder and very good in seabirds identification) went in an expedition through the seas between 30 to 150 miles north of Porto Santo. I suppose you are interested to add the sightings to the "Birding Madeira website. We did manage to see Sperm Whales, Balaenoptera sp. and many Stenella coeruleoalba and Sea Turtles. Most of the observations were made around Gorringe Bank, Unicorn Bank and Ampére Bank. The main goal of this expedition was to map the sea depth of Madeira's ZEE and Continental Platform."

24th September 2006: (Madeira Wind Birds in lit.)

Buff-breasted Sandpiper Tryngites subruficollis: One bird present feeding on the lawn around the pond at Lugar de Baixo since 8th September, when it was found for the first time (though the names of the observers are unknow at the moment). This is the first record ever for the whole Madeira archipelago! Here you can view a photo of the bird»

The sightings kindly provided by the Madeira based company Madeira Wind Birds.

12–19th September 2006: Göran Cederwall & Heidi Malmgren (Sweden) whom stayed at Porto Moniz most of the time for true seawatching did provide (daily!) sightings as follows:

Zino's/Fea's Petrel Pterodroma madeira/feae: 1 off Porto Moniz on 13th and 1 at sea off Desertas on 17th September, most probably a Fea's Petrel. An excellent observation of a single moving around close to shore for about three minutes off Porto Moniz on 19th September!
Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii: One seen in the evening on 13th, 15th and 16th respectively. Most adult birds seem to have leaved the archipelago heading to their wintering grounds at sea in southerly latitudes. At least 10 during the boat trip to Desertas with Ventura do Mar on 17th (+ one chick on Deserta Grande). A nice close-to-shore-sighting (15 minutes) of a single off Porto Moniz on 19th September.
Madeiran Storm-petrel Oceanodroma castro: One, not 100 per cent positive identified, passed quickly close to the shore at Porto Moniz on 16th September. Certainly an Oceanodroma-petrel, and as the Leach's is very rare in these waters (especially in this time of year), the bird seen was most probably a Madeiran S-p.
Great Shearwater Puffinus gravis: Among hundreds of Cory's Shearwaters, passing both east and west, we happily recorded at least 20 "great" ones towards west during one hour in the evening on 12th. On 13th; zero between 08:15-14.15, but 22 towards west in the evening (16:45-20:15). On 14th; 32 in the morning and 260 in the evening (18:45-19:45), all flying west off Porto Moniz. On 15th;105 towards west between 16:40 and 18:40. On 16th; 9 westwards between 16:00-20:00. On 18th; zero in the morning, 4 in the evening. In total 452 Great Shearwaters were recorded during the week!
Sooty Shearwater Puffinus griseus: A single towards west off Porto Moniz on 14th September.
Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus: Seen daily, with 100-150 birds passing west each day on 12-15th, and at least 300 towards west in the evening on 16th. Approximately 200 passed westwards in the evening on 18th and 50 on 19th, all at Porto Moniz.
Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus: 2 passing westwards off Porto Moniz on 18th. Rare in Madeiran waters and only the 5 and 6th record this year!
Long-tailed Skua Stercorarius longicaudus: One juvenile off Funchal when returning from Desertas with the boat Ventura on 17th September.
Trocaz Pigeon Columba trocaz: A single bird seen close to Rosario as we travelled to Porto Moniz by our hired car on 12th. Close and nice views of six pigeons feeding on the ground at Santa on 16th, and four in the same area on 18th September.
Barn Owl Tyto alba schmitzi: Probably two pairs seen at Ponta do Pargo in the evening on 18th September. Two were spotted as they sat on the air cable in the beginning of the road leading downwards to the lighthouse, one on a roof and finally one sitting on a short upright pole close to the restaurant near the lighthouse.
Eurasian Siskin Carduelis spinus: At least 3 birds seen close to Santa on several ocassions on 16th and 18th. (Before late 90's this species were rare in the archipelago, but since 2001 it seem to breed on the main island, however, very localised). However, the species have not been reported from Madeira during this year!

Cetaceans seen during the boat trip to the Desertas on 17th September:
Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus: A group of at least 5-6 dolphins.
Pilot Whale Globicephala machrorhynchus: A nice sighting of a calf along with its mother.
Several sightings of dolphin schools and a few unidentified whales (inluding a mother and calf) off Porto Moniz on 18th, and one school of dolphins and two huge but distant whales, which created enormous blows on 19th (Fin Whales?).

The sightings above kindly provided via SMS by Göran Cederwall & Heidi Malmgren, Sweden.

5–12th September 2006: Mattia Altieri (Italy) has kindly provided a short report as follows:

These are my best sightings (beside all the resident specialties):
Red-legged Partridge Alectoris rufa: 4 at Ponta do Pargo on 8th September.
Common Quail Coturnix coturnix: One at Ponta de São Lourenço on 7th September.
Zino's/Fea's Petrel Pterodroma madeira/feae: 1 at Porto Moniz on 8th September, 1 at Porto Moniz on 11th, and 10 birds during the Desertas trip with Ventura do Mar, of which two passed very near the boat (less than 10 meters!).
Great Shearwater Puffinus gravis: ca. 400 passing westwards off Porto Moniz on 8th September
(15.00-19.30 hrs), and the incredible number of 3000 to 3200 birds westwards at Porto Moniz on 11th September (14.00-20.00 hrs). An incredible endless stream and it was difficult to count them correctly!!
Sooty Shearwater Puffinus griseus: A single towards west off Porto Moniz on 8th September.
Arctic Skua Stercorarius parasiticus and Pomarine Skua Stercorarius pomarinus: 3-4 of each species passing Porto Moniz on 8th and 11th September.
Common/Arctic Tern Sterna hirundo/paradisaea: Large flocks (60-70 birds in each flock) passed westwards at Porto Moniz on 11th September.
Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii: One adult near the Funchal harbour on 6th September.
Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto: A single bird seen at Caniçal on 7th September.

Sea animals seen during the amazing boat trip to the Desertas on 10th September:
Bryde's Whale Balaenoptera edeni: One seen and identified during the trip.
False Killer Whale Pseudorca crassidens: 40-50 individuals! Compared to 1-2 sightings a year!
Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus: At least 30-40
Atlantic Spotted Dolphin Stenella frontalis: many groups seen
Pilot Whale Globicephala machrorhynchus: At least 20
Monk Seal Monachus monachus: 3 swimming/feeding in Doca bay for about an hour!
Loggerhead Sea Turtle Caretta caretta: One paddling at surface at sea!

The sightings kindly provided by Mattia Altieri, (Bolzano) Italy.

8th September 2006: (Madeira Wind Birds in lit.)

Buff-breasted Sandpiper Tryngites subruficollis: One bird present feeding on the lawn around the pond at Lugar de Baixo on 8th September (though the names of the observers are unknow at the moment). This is the first record ever for the whole Madeira archipelago! Here you can view a photo of the bird»

The sightings kindly provided by the Madeira based company Madeira Wind Birds.

3–8th September 2006: Leif Dehlin, Lasse Nilsson, Per Muhr & Bengt Andersson (Sweden) has kindly provided a short report as follows:

Zino's/Fea's Petrel Pterodroma madeira/feae: 1 on 4th and 4 on 7th off Porto Moniz. 12 on 5th during the boat crossing with Ventura do Mar, and 4 bird on the return on 6th.
Great Shearwater Puffinus gravis: Seen daily, but most numerous during late afternoon and evening. On 4th September we didn't count carefully, but at least 1500 birds were logged as they passed westwards during a few hours in the evening at Porto Moniz. Furthermore: 184 on 5th (19.00-20.15 hrs), 445 ex on 7th (17.00-19.10 hrs) and finally 413 ex on 8th (14.45-19.00 hrs), all towards west off Porto Moniz. However, many birds that passed distantly were not counted, the daily totals is therefore rather on the small side, but a pure delight despite this.
Sooty Shearwater Puffinus griseus: 1 on 3rd, 3 on 4th and 1 on 8th, all of them towards west off Porto Moniz.
Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus: Seen daily, but most numerous on 8th when 996 birds was logged passing westwards at Porto Moniz between 14.45-19.00 hours.
Little Shearwater Puffinus assimilis baroli: 5 on 4th and 1 on 8th, all recorded at Porto Moniz.
Arctic Skua Stercorarius parasiticus and Pomarine Skua Stercorarius pomarinus: A few of each recorded during the stay.
Long-tailed Skua Stercorarius longicaudus: In total 28 birds (divided in two flocks) headed westwards on 4th off Porto Moniz. As the flocks passed distantly, we only suggest it was Long-tailed Skuas and they were not 100 per cent positive identified, unfortunately.
Common Tern Sterna hirundo: During two hours in the morning and three in the evening approximately 600 birs passed Porto Moniz towards west on 3rd September.
Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur: One at Ponta do Pargo in the evening on 7th.
Barn Owl Tyto alba schmitzi: Two birds seen close to the lighthouse at Ponta do Pargo (and another one found dead) from about 22:00 pm and onwards on 7th September.
Northern Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe: Two positive identified birds at Ponta do Pargo on 7th, along with a mystery rust-coloured wheatear present at the site too. (Northern Wheatear are a rare passage migrant and winter visitor in Madeira, so three birds present at the very same locality are indeed a great sighting, due to Madeiran conditions!)

The sightings kindly provided by Leif Dehlin, Lasse Nilsson, Per Muhr & Bengt Andersson, Sweden.

All time high record during a single day (though only during two hours of seawatch!) in Madeira (e.g. Porto Moniz). Congratulations! Unfortunately Per and Ulf have to leave Porto Moniz for other booked events concerning birding. One can just speculate what the final numbers of Great Shearwaters would have been if Per and Ulf had been able to count them until dawn! However, I think they are very happy at the moment!

Porto Moniz on 1st September:
Great Shearwater Puffinus gravis: 5023 birds passing westwards during the day! The second highest daily count in Madeira (e.g. Porto Moniz).

24–31st July 2006: Rob Holmes (UK) has kindly provided sightings as follows:

I have recently returned from a week in the Madeira archipelago and have a few sightings of interest to report:
Brent Goose
Branta b. bernicla: One towards east off Praia Formosa (located c.5 kms west of Funchal) early morning 25th. Most probably the same individual that has been present at Porto Santo recently. However, still the first record of the species in the Madeira archipelago!
Fea's/Zino's Petrel Pterodroma feae/madeira: At least 12 sighting on the 2nd day Ventura do Mar trip to the Desertas – all occurred on 25th off Bugio.
Zino's Petrel Pterodroma madeira: 7 sightings of 9 individuals (including a 'flock' of 3!) at Pico de Areeiro on 26th.

Sea animals
Monk Seal Monachus monachus: A superb encounter just outside Funchal harbour on 26th. The animal was first observed with an Octopus on it's head trying to escape being dinner! After this appetizer, a long fish species was caught followed by much thrashing before being swallowed!
Fin Whale Balaenoptera physalis: 1 from catamaran trip out of Funchal on 29th.

Sightings kindly provided by Rob Holmes, England.

9–15 July 2006: Derek Charles (UK) has kindly provided sightings as follows:

Mallard Anas platyrhynchos: Possible wild birds were seen with feral ducks at both Sao Vicente and Lugar de Baixo.
Zino's Petrel Pterodroma madeira: A night time visit to the nesting site is a must for any visitor. Birds started calling around 11pm and we seen at least 2 birds as they passed only feet over our heads. According to my guide it is the young birds that come and play around the nesting sites, whereas the adults just go straight to the nest hole. One of the highlights, of my trip to Madeira.
Fea's/Zino's Petrel Pterodrom feae/madeira: Three birds were seen during the ferry journey from Madeira to Porto Santo. One bird was seen in the morning trip about half way between the two ports and two birds were seen on the evening return trip both seen fairly close to Madeira.
Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus granti: One male glided by my hotel room as I was seawatching on my last evening.
Common Coot Fulica atra: 4 were present at Lugar de Baixo.
Common Moorhen Gallinula chloropus: 2 birds were seen at Lugar de Baixo.
Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus: Up to 8 birds were present in Funchal Harbour which was a surprise for me. Most seemed to be graellsii but at least one may have been an intermedius.
Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto: 3 birds were seen just above the industrial area at Caniçal. Seemingly they have been in the area for over two years but can be very hard to pin down.
Ruddy Ground-Dove Columbina talpacoti: One at Porto Santo. Most probably an escape of this American (and less migrating) species.
Trocaz Pigeon Columba trocaz: 4 Birds were seen in a Laurel Forest at Lamaceiros near Porto Moniz. Birds are extremely shy and best looked for in the early morning but with patience they can be seen well.
Pallid Swift Apus pallidus: A few birds were seen mainly in the evening in Funchal and birds seemed to be nesting on cliffs near Porto Moniz.
Hoopoe Upupa epops: 3 birds seen from a minibus on Porto Santo and a single bird was present at Ponto de Sao Lourenco. Seemingly they are uncommon on Madeira.
Dunnock Prunella modularis: A single bird was present at Ponta do Pargo. If the record is accepted it is the first record for Madeira, and only the second for the Macaronesia (recorded on Tenerife, Canaries, on 26th January 2002).
Spanish Sparrow Passer hispaniolensis: Birds were seen in the area above Caniçal along with Rock Sparrows. Very common on Santo Porto
Rock Sparrow Petronia petronia: Like the Spanish Sparrow the only place I encountered this species on Madeira was just above Caniçal.

Sightings kindly provided by Derek Charles, England.

Porto Santo 6-13th July:
Brent Goose Branta b. bernicla: One seen on four occasions between 8 and 12th July, both at sea and in the golf course pool. A possible escape, but there is no evidence for that, as the Madeirans rarely keep waterfowls in captivity. If accepted this is the first record for the archipelago.
Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus: 2 juveniles at Tanque Pond on 10th July. Please scroll down to February...
Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia: 1 at Campo de Cima (Golf Course) on 12th July. Same bird as in February 2006? Please scroll down.

Eurasian Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur: 1 at Ponta de São Lourenço, near Casa do Sardinha, on 18th July.
