Transparent utfyllnad Sightings in 2007

1023rd September: Franck Ishøi (Denmark) have kindly provided sightings from his amazingly seabird trip as follows:

(Frank's sent his second report to the editor of the Birding Madeira website at 22:55 pm today, 19th)
I hereby send you a seabird report from Porto Moniz:

Saturday 15th
Great Shearwater
Puffinus gravis: 3
Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus: 1.500

Sunday 16th. All day and in company with Claes Lööv, Sweden.
Fea's Petrel Pterodroma feae: 9
Zino's Petrel Pterodroma madeira: 1 together with 2 Fea's at close range (300 m.)! Obviously smaller, slimmer and quite smaller bill than Fea's. Flight more erratic with faster wing beats and less gliding moments. Upperside is quite different, where Fea's looks like the head is darker than the wings, Zino's is just opposite and here the wings is much darker than the head, and it is only the small dark eye patch that sticks out from the pale grey head. I also compared the Zino's with a Bulwer's Petrel and the different is not that huge as if it was a Fea's Petrel, concerning flight action.
Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii: 23
Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea borealis: 1000 (only counted this day)
Great Shearwater Puffinus gravis: 4.200 passing W. (The fifth highest daily count ever in Madeira! It's somehow interesting that the peak for both Great and Manx are relatively late, compared to previous years at Porto Moniz) Here you find previous totals and peaks of Great Shearwater»
Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus: 8.300 passing W
Pomarine Skua Stercorarius pomarinus: 3 adults

I stay in Porto Moniz until Sunday the 23rd of September, so hopefully there will be more to report.

There was also a Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos) present at Porto Santo in a little pond just outside the main city on 11th September. (7th record in the Madeira archipelago).

Late April 2007: David Uit de Weerd (Netherlands) have kindly provided a report and two photographs on an adult Spotted Sandpiper in summer plumage at Lugar de Baixo:
  Hello,
With this e-mail (and my telephone call to Catharina Alves on 29 April 2007) I would like to inform you of an adult summer plumage Spotted Sandpiper at Lugar de Baixo on 29 and 30 april 2007. See another photo here»

When visiting your great website afterwards I saw that on 21-22 February 2007 there was also seen a Spotted Sandpiper at this place. Probably the same one, I didn't know until now!

Sightings and photos kindly provided by David Uit de Weerd, Netherlands.

19th to 26th April 2007: Ricardo Guerreiro (Portugal) have kindly provided sightings during his SPEA project at sea as follows:
Since 2006 I'm working in the same SPEA project as Alexandre Leitão (see below on 22th January to 11th February 2007). I spent only 6 days around Madeira (19 to 26 April but 24 and 25 April I was on the island), on board the same Navy research vessel as Alexandre did on those long 5 weeks before. So, although I may have some interesting stuff, this will not be as much as his reports and is surely not enough to take any strong conclusions. Nevertheless it could be a small contribution to a whole.

I see a general absence of seabirds as I get far away from land (specially after 100 miles or so). Curiously, I did this work for 2 months on the Azores last year, and I didn't see birds regularly on the sea as far away as 100 miles from land; the limit would be around 50 or 60 miles. Again, this were only 6 days so I will not jump on conclusions that birds here are more common further away from land than on the Azores. The more common species was Cory's shearwater, with great numbers around the island. Some Band-rumped Storm-petrels occurred in an area south of the Coral Patch and Ampère banks and the species seemed more common here than further south closer to the island, where only occasionaly I spotted them. The crew of the boat (specially the captain who is interested in birds) tells me that the place where they are more common is in the Ampère bank (around 240 miles northeast of Madeira), but the closest we got to it was around 25 miles south. As Alexandre before me, I get the impression that White-faced are common on the northeast quadrant off Madeira. The area where I saw them most starts around 80 miles and ends up at 150 miles east to northeast from Ponta de São Lourenço. Bulwer's Petrel, Little and Manx Shearwaters occured sporadically on these northeast areas (1 or 2 every now and then) but Bulwer's and Manx were more common on the south of Desertas and Madeira. I did not spot Little on the south (I spent only 1 day on this south area and always 1 mile or so from land). Cory's were speacially abundant here.

Madeiran Storm-petrel Oceanodroma castro: 6 resting on the water 26' SE of the Ampère Bank on 21st April.
White-faced Storm-petrel Pelagodroma marina: 1 at 80' E and 1 at 100' E off Ponta de São Lourenço on 19th April, 2 at 80' E, 1 at 95' E and 1 at 100' E off Ponta de São Lourenço on 20th April, 1 at 216' ENE, 2 at 150' ENE and 1 at 143' ENE off Ponta de São Lourenço on 20th April.
Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea: 1500 from Deserta Grande to Funchal on 23rd April and 850 from Funchal to Ponta do Sol on 26th April.
Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus: 9 from Funchal to Ponta do Sol on 26th April.
Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria bulwerii: 9 from middle way from Deserta Grande to Funchal on 23rd April (could be interesting for arrival times as people from SPEA Madeira told me that 2 days before they had been out to sea and saw none).
Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica: 8 flying east at 3,5' SW off Ponta do Sol on 26th April.

Sightings and photos kindly provided by Ricardo Guerreiro, Portugal.

22th January to 11th February 2007: Alexandre Leitão (Portugal) have kindly provided sightings during his five-week-long journey at sea as follows:

I spent 5 weeks aboard, 3 and a half days on Madeira, and 3 hours on Porto Santo. I'll give some of the highlights (that you can cut freely, if you feel so). The general scenario is an absence of seabirds from Madeira seashoresduring this time of year, and the regular and constant presence of Madeiran Strom-petrel on open-seas (very difficut to spot, as you know, so the numbers may seem a little lower than expected). I get the strong impression that White-faced are regular, at least on an area northeast of Desertas, and Booby and bonxies may ocurr more frequently than we can guess from the records published.
Nevertheless, great time of year for whales. I got 10 species of Cetacea, and 2 great days for seaturtles. I'l give you records until 150 miles Porto Santo. (For interesting comparision please see Alexandre's report from his pelagic study trip in late September 2006 here»).
So, here are the species, numbers and localizations:

Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea borealis: 27/1 - 3 inds. off Ponta de S. Lourenço, 31/1 - 1 ind. 25 miles NW off Madeira, 1/2 - 1 ind. 20 miles off N Madeira, 2/2 - 5 inds. 15 miles N of Madeira and 7/2 - 8 inds. 12 miles E off Porto Santo.
Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus: 27/1 - 72 inds. 5 miles off Ponta de S. Lourenço, 30/1 - 21 inds. off Ponta do Garajau, 10/2 - 6 inds. 18 miles E off Desertas.
Little Shearwater Puffinus assimilis baroli: 30/1 - 2 inds. between Madeira and Porto Santo, some 10 miles N off Ponta de S. Lourenço, 5/2 - 2 inds. 30 miles E of Porto Santo, 6/2 - 3 inds. 35 miles E of Porto Santo, 10/2 - 3 inds. 25 miles E of Desertas.
